What began as a student’s idea has come to life, and the Art 20/30 students at Peace Wapiti Academy (PWA) have taken their art outside the classroom. Ms. Jennifer Johnson’s Grade 11 and 12 art students finished off the semester by spray painting their original art pieces on the side of the old Grande Prairie Composite High School.
In collaboration with Mr. Dennis Vobeyda, Principal of the Composite High School, the class designed their own pieces to paint on the side of the old building before it is demolished. The students took vigorous steps to get to this point. Ms. Johnson says her students first drew their designs on paper before using the projector to create them on a larger scale. They then cut out their stencils, all while envisioning the different layers they would use to create depth.
The street art project was originally organized by PWA teacher Ms. Lisa Knudtson and Ms. Johnson says she was excited to keep it going. “It’s a great project and the students really enjoy it. It’s a fun way to wrap up the semester.”
In preparation for their final project, the students studied famous England-based street artist Banksy and used their newly acquired knowledge to create their own unique pieces.
